Baptisms

The sacrament of Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body the Church. As such, it is an important event, not just for the person being baptized but also for the entire parish community. At baptism we remember and celebrate again God's call to us to be in relationship with him as the People of God.

Baptism normally takes place during the Eucharist on Sunday. Holy Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost (50 days after Easter Day), All Saints' Sunday (the first Sunday in November), and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the Sunday after January 6). Holy Baptism is also appropriate at the time of the Bishop's visitation. Baptisms may be scheduled at other times if necessary.

Persons interested in the sacrament for themselves or for their children should contact the parish office for more information.

Confirmations

In the early church the bishop baptized and laid hands on the new members and prayed for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that they might be equipped by God to live the life of a Christian. When the multitudes began to join the church, bishops allowed priests to baptize but reserved the laying on of hands - confirmation - for themselves.

All baptized members are expected to receive the sacrament of confirmation, either when they reach maturity or in connection with baptism if they are baptized as adults. Confirmation is a mature commitment to live a Christian life, trusting the Holy Spirit to empower us to do so. In confirmation "we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." After confirmation, one is a confirmed communicant member.

Normally, parish priests prepare persons for baptism and confirmation by a course of instruction, often including their sponsors and other members of the congregation. When they have been prepared, the priests present them to the bishop for confirmation.

We hope to begin instruction and preparation for a new group of confirmands soon. If you or your loved one is ready for this life-changing commitment, please contact the church office to register.
