Huntington Area Habitat for Humanity
In combination to the yearly monetary contribution, Trinity joined with eight other downtown churches to build in our community.
Each church’s membership was asked to provide:
- 4 week days of labor
- 4 days of lunches
- one Saturday of labor
- and $2800.
After the groundbreaking, regardless of our skills, there was an opportunity for involvement for everyone. Work site volunteers were asked to work ½ day. Lunch volunteers provided for 6 to 10 people which consisted of pizza or subs with cookies and drinks.
Habitat homes are built with partner families who must work on the construction (350 sweat equity hours) and then pay for their home with manageable monthly payments.
Huntington WV Area Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical, Christian ministry, whose mission is to partner with qualified families in need, and provide them the opportunity for safe, decent and affordable housing.
On October 25, 1989, a group of concerned individuals met at Central Christian Church for the first time with a plan of tackling the challenge of poverty housing in the Huntington community. Deciding to move forward with their initiative, the organization obtained it's certificate of incorporation in February of 1990 followed by becoming an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in October of that same year. The need for affordable housing in Cabell County attributed to the affiliate's growth and now over 20 years later, Huntington WV Area Habitat for Humanity is still working to ensure that every man, woman and child in our community has a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety.
One of 19 affiliates in West Virginia, and 2,200 nationwide, the affiliate partners with qualified low-income families in need and provides them the opportunity for safe, decent and affordable housing. To date Huntington WV Area Habitat for Humanity has provided 75 homes for residents of Cabell County who were in dire need of better housing. The average cost of a three bedroom Habitat house is about $50,000. Partner families are required to log a pre-determined amount of sweat equity hours into the construction of Habitat projects, including work on their own Habitat house. These houses are then sold to the partner families at no profit, and are financed through affordable, interest-free mortgage loans from the affiliate.
